Flowers for the Soul

5″x7″ pastels on sanded paper

Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.

Luther Burbank

I don’t know about more helpful, but I know fresh flowers in my home make me happier. I love the way this little study turned out.

The Color of Dawn

10″x8″ pastel on sanded paper

“Pink is a beautiful color, because it is one of the colors that the sun makes at twilight and in the dawns.” –C. JoyBell C.

I have always loved when my art reminds someone of a story. Thanks to those who have opened their hearts and shared their breast cancer stories. I am honored to hear stories about mothers, sisters, friends, and God Children, favorite teachers, choir members, neighbors, Aunts, and Grandmothers.

Quiet Rain

7″x5″ pastel on sanded paper

Into each life some rain must fall.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

A few houses back, I put a rain gauge on a piece of wood with this quote in my garden. I love the literal and the metaphorical meaning.

Yesterday my feet were wet all day long, it was a little reminder that most days I enjoy the luxury of dry socks, and that yesterday I got to start my day with a splash!

A Flower Not a Weed

12″ square pastel on sanded paper

Be honest, be nice, be a flower not a weed.” –Aaron Neville

I love this quote. Be a flower not a weed! Who would deny the beauty of these Evening Primroses? Some people might call them weeds, I prefer the term “wildflowers”, and I delight in their wild, pink beauty! I am a firm believer that the difference between weed and plant is often one of marketing. Perhaps passing yourself off as flower, rather than weed is making people believe you belong, and that starts with deciding so yourself.

Backroad Beauty

10″x8″ pastel on sanded paper

Sometimes, a detour or wrong turn can turn into a gift of unexpected beauty. I have a terrible sense of direction, and I am easily distracted by beautiful things along the way, which often causes me to be on roads which were not on my planned route. I have learned to enjoy these moments because I might happen upon something delightful when I am off my beaten path. Perhaps it will be afternoon light on an old barn, a field of flowers, or a longhorn in a field. I hope that when life gives me detours I can apply this same lesson of patience and hope still enjoy the drive.

Lessons From a Field

Hanging on it’s Stalk

5″x7″ pastel on sanded paper

I passed these sunflowers walking to school with my daughter. They seem to be the last bits of summer hanging on by a thread.

“The gaudy leonine sunflower Hangs black and barren on its stalk And down the windy garden walk The dead leaves scatter – hour by hour”. -Oscar Wilde

Please come see my one woman Walking to School show! Opens September 13th 6-8pm Sunderman Gallery DALLAS,TX.
