Flowers Shall Grow

This is a field of yellow flowers. I didn’t note which species on my photo, but I know enough about yellow composites to know each flower is not that remarkable on its own. It probably had a woody stem, perhaps even slightly prickly, and they usually have a fragrance that is…well, stinky. As I painted, I thought of the thousands and thousands of acts we go through as mothers – the small things that alone don’t amount to much, honestly, they too might be just a wee bit stinky. However, if you can get a bit of perspective, by climbing a tree, standing on your car, or perhaps a stack of calendars and yearbooks the big picture can take your breath away.

Climbing Trees: A Poem
By Joe Suzz

Mom seeking quiet

Hurried me outside:

Forgetting my shoes by the front closet,

Leaving my socks on the back porch

Through the screen door, then,

Running to the canopying maples

Just past the clustered pines,

Mom had things to do, but she gravitated towards

The double paned glass.

Star burning energy, glimpses of sensation:

Climbing high enough to see Robin’s nest,

It’s fluttering wings, perched on the twisted twigs,

Feeding its young.

I perched myself a time or two. Watching my dog, Nicky, chasing squirrels

Along the fence. Sometimes, seeing my mom through the branches.

In the crossing of brief moments,

Childhood eclipsed.

Reading Tree

I love prairie flowers, and the way the change every few weeks. This composition was tricky with that one live oak tree, but what a lovely walk to such a beautiful reading spot. Spend a minute under that tree today when things get crazy.

Roadside Primrose

The evening primroses are in full bloom right now. I love how the light illuminates through their petals, almost making them glow. This hill was covered in them, almost like it had been painted pink. I included the highway below because it reminds me that there is beauty all around, even near noisy interstates.
