great experiments with color triads. How (if possible) do you compare mixing oils for that perfect color with layering pastels?

I find that I apply oil paint quite thick, so I do lots of mixing of paint on the palette (not on the canvas), whereas with pastels I tend to layer and layer and the mixing is more optical.
